I. Executive Summary
Maryland fatality rates for DUI related accidents are in a stall state of 30% involvement for all fatal accidents. Maryland is having an issue trying to lower below 30% of all driving accidents that involve a person under the influence since 1996(NTSB, 2011). The state has tried to raise the awareness through stricter punishments but was not successful in decreasing this statistic. I have provided the Maryland government with two Proposals that would decrease the number of fatal crashes involving someone under the influence of alcohol significantly.
The first proposal is that Maryland implement a law that makes all vehicles required to have ignition interlock that are registered to this state. The ignition interlocks will lower the fatality rates to 1% in which one of the drivers is under the influence of alcohol. It will also enable the police force to use their man power in other needed areas where crime is affecting the state.
The second proposal is that Maryland increase their punishments for DUI offenders to relate to the seriousness of the crime. If a person is to be charged with a DUI offense then they are to be charge with this punishment in the traffic section of the crime with imprudent driving, endangering the safety of the public, driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI), negligent driving, and mandatory suspension of license for one year, and 15 points automatically added to license.
