Roche’s New Scientific Method: Phase 1 Individual Project
The purpose for this paper was to read the case study Roche’s New Scientific Method in Pearlson and Saunders (2010) textbook and analyze and discuss the strategic implications as related to management information systems (MIS) that was derived from this case. This paper discusses how the company leveraged information technology (IT) to its strategic advantage. Also discussed are lessons learned that would be valuable for an MIS manager. The case study focuses on the methods used at the Roche Group, a pharmaceutical company, and how the company took advantage of the genomics and high through-put screening technology (Pearlson & Saunders, 2010).
After reviewing Roche’s New Scientific Method the 7 S’s under hyper competition that are demonstrated; (1) strategic smooth saying, this is when an organization seeks out new knowledge and opportunities (Pearlson & Saunders, 2010). This was demonstrated when Roche sought out new talent to speed up the discovery process for new drugs, (2) positioning for speed is defined as preparing the organization to react as quickly as possible. This strategy was demonstrated when Lee Babiss was hired to head the preclinical research, his motto was “fail fast”, meaning don’t continue down the road of Abilene when you know it is a dead end, (3) Roche’s strategy was to have a “ultra-competitive” culture in its early stages and therefore displayed “positioning for surprise” by preparing the organization to respond to the market place that would surprise competitors by providing drugs to treat early disposition of people with disease and cancer (Pearlson & Saunders, 2010).
