Introduction

Hydroponics is an agricultural method used for growing plants without the use of soil. A type of gardening that can be set up almost anywhere. Space is never a problem with hydroponic system. The study promotes soil-less culture. A hydroponics operation typically has more control over the root environment for each plant through constant monitoring. This allows hydroponic growers to be able to provide the highest level of conditions required for whatever type plant is being grown. The study on hydroponic gardening will be conducted at Bulacan State University located in Bustos, Bulacan. Most of the lot area in the school is consists of school buildings, departments, offices, canteens and covered court. A small lot area is allocated for gardening. The study aims to promote utilizing hydroponic gardening system especially in an area where spaces for gardening is limited only. The effectiveness of hydroponic gardening is determined on the growth of lettuce (Lactuca sativa).The plant however requires a habitat that provides stability, allowing its roots to reach the source of nutrients. In other word, a growing medium is required in hydroponic system. A growing medium is any substance that a plant uses to anchor and grow its roots. The ideal hydroponic growing medium is neutral pH and provides enough water, aeration, and support for the plant to grow. The study on hydroponic gardening also determine the effectiveness of using saw dust and rice hulls as growing media for lettuce(Lactuca sativa).
