Abstract

Diversity is not an occasional problem that only needs to be addressed from time to time. Diversity should be nurtured, maintained and reinforced. By recognizing people’s similarities and differences, I am able to become better individual, employee and leader as well. Being reared in a non-diverse neighborhood can impact one’s level of trust in other people and it’s difficult for others to reciprocate that trust. It is important that people have a clear understanding of diversity through frequent training and be able to communicate openly about it. Through my own personal experiences, I have learned that understanding other cultures and differences can help one avoid offending. Valuing diversity is not a skill that you learn inherently is must be taught and upheld constantly.

Diversity Reflection

Diversity refers to human attributes that vary from our own and in groups to which we belong. These qualities can be manifested in other individuals and groups. Measurements of diversity include age, society, gender, physical abilities/qualities, race, sexual orientation, educational background, geographic location, income, marital status, military experience, parental status, religious beliefs, work experience, and job classification (“Why diversity matters”, 2010).

Diversity as an idea emphasizes a broader set of qualities than race and gender. In the setting of the workplace, valuing diversity means crafting a workplace that respects and includes dissimilarities, distinguishing the unique contributions that individuals with many types of differences can make, and creating a work environment that maximizes the potential of all employees (“Why diversity matters”, 2010).
