Oral communication is a person will acquire over their lifetime. Communication, specifically on what communication means to most people. Communication is the transference and understanding of meaning. This can be seen in Baden Eunson’s quote “the study of the transfer of meaning”. However, communication is a challenging concept, with a search on ‘communication’ likely to bring up topics as diverse as team communication, body language and electronics. In communication, “who”, “what”, “Channel”, “whom” and “effect” can make a model of it, that is who says what in what channel to whom with what effect (Lasswell 1948). Furthermore, according to Berlo (1960) there are four parts in communication that can be described as Source, Message, Channel and Receiver.

For communication today, English can defined as source, message and channel, also the receiver. English as a global lingua franca makes for cross-cultural communication. For instance, today eight in every ten international conferences designate English as their chief working language; and ninety-eight precent leading scientific journals in the world are published in English or have an English version. Further, the extensive use of a common language has a unifying effect on people who do not speak the same mother tongue. Common sense informs us that language makes for a sense of belonging and sympathy. Lastly, the expansion of English also enables people whose native tongue is not English to appreciate the English-speaking cultures more efficiently and more fully. It is generally-accepted that many English-speaking cultures are among the richest and most dynamic cultures in the world. I concluded that I was not a good communicator, but I can use my new knowledge about the process of communication from MGMT102 help me become a better communicator.
