Religion Assignment 1

Explain whether you agree or disagree with the notion that religion and science can coexist. Name at least two (2) key points from the podcast that substantiate your position. 

Can religion and science coexist? Yes I believe they can. In the interview the speaker explains a statement from Francisco Ayalya’s (Faith Matters. 2010, April 02) who was quoted saying “science and religion need not be in contradiction if they are properly understood. Religion explains why and science explains how, but they are one in the same" (Lab activity: Chapter 1). This statement is a perfect complement to each other, is a compromise stating they don’t have to be contradictory towards each other, and it’s possible to coexist with the two different beliefs.

I have always thought of religion as a guide to what will help you get to your wanted destination. When I was taught the Bible it explained how we should live our lives to obtain peace, prosperity, love and happiness. However, I don’t remember it ever saying that there won't be hard times, grief or sadness, but it does say that there is a reason for all of these things. In my experience all these events, whether they were happy or sad, made me a better person. I don’t believe I would be the person I am now if I hadn’t had to experience all my life events. It also tells me how to conduct financial business as well as how to love and respect others. The Bible provides a roadmap for all mankind to follow that is guaranteed to lead to a purpose filled and meaning full life. It also gives warning of what may happen if we do not maintain these principles and the damage that it could cause. 

Keeping my personal spiritual beliefs has given me a greater understanding of the world around me and has helped me cope with many problems I have or will encounter. That is not to say I haven’t found some stories that have been proven or disproven by science very interesting. I can...
