Rhetorical Analysis

A standoff occurred late night on Thursday, February 9, 2012, that left three people dead and two others injured. This event occurred in an RV park in Deerfield Beach, Florida, where it is said to be a community of tourists. For unknown reasons, a man shot another man twice, and took his own family and the wife of the victim into hostage. As far as not knowing the reason for the event, reports show that there was no relation between the shot man and his wife with the gunman. I retrieved information from the National Post, The Huffington Post, MSNBC, and Newsweek.

This event is important because it shows how violence, not only domestic but in general, occurs unexpectedly for reasons that may be unknown. In this case violence is among strangers and family. It can be assumed that the gunman, William De Jesus, had issues/ problems within his own family, took his emotions, and turned them into action that altered the lives of many. This event probably could have been handled a different way, unfortunately like many others, his family was more than likely fearful of reaching out for help. As for myself, violence has never been a part of my life but I believe many are affected by it, don’t speak of it, and more importantly don’t look for help, so it is vital to have everyone aware of cases that occur so they can prevent them.

Although all of the websites provide important information for the readers, they all contain what they believe is important to the article. They all contain facts and biases. I found the differences and similarities between the articles affect the event in a variety of ways.

First of all, the headlines of all the articles mention that someone was killed. This can be to attract the attention of the readers. Newsweek and MSNBC both are perceived as “straight out” since the titles of the articles both reveal “three dead”. The information is given like if someone is throwing you an object...
