Communication and Ethics

Since we have been talking in class about communication and ethics, I asked myself “Could we think about ethical communication? Or is it possible to talk about communications and ethical reasoning at the same time and in the same place?” When thinking about “ethical communication”, it comes to my mind the ideas of diversity, differences, similarities and contrasts and the way in which both skills are related.

Looking at the different ways people use to communicate, I can appreciate the diversity and similarities. In oral communication, I pay attention to words, voice inflexions, body language, what people say, what they wanted to say and what I understand. In written communication, the punctuation usually helps me to understand the message and get the writers’ ideas. In sign language, there is a combination of hand and mouth movements and face expressions. So, if everybody is able to understand a message, why are there lots of misunderstandings in the communication process? I realized that even though people know the tools to communicate properly, they rarely use them. Usually, people focus on their own ideas instead of paying attention to the others’ point of view, -hearing rather listening.

I have learned in class that as a Professional Studies student, I must be able to make others understand what my degree is about and how I am going to make three concentrations work in one degree. The language, grammar, vocabulary and punctuation get my readers to a point where they understand where I am going and how I am going to get there, avoiding duality and vain ideas.

At the same time, in my professional career, I must communicate my ideas properly to get others involved in the communication process, sharing ideas, beliefs, thoughts, and knowledge and developing a growing and ethical work environment.
