1. What is digestion?
The process of breaking down food by mechanical and enzymatic action in the alimentary canal into substances that can be used by the body.
2. List some other names of the digestive tract.
Another name for the digestive tract is the gastrointestinal tract.
3. Explain where and how the mechanical breakdown of food occurs.
Teeth begin digestion mechanically, chewing breaks apart food. There are two sets of teeth, incisors for cutting and canines for tearing, and premolars and molars for grinding.
4. How does food move through the digestive tract.
In a wave-like movement, called peristalsis, muscles propel food and liquid along the digestive tract.
5. What is released from the gall bladder when food is in the duodenum?
Cholecystokinin is released from the gall bladder when food is in the duodenum.
