A Communication Coordinators ability to effectively yield changes in awareness, understanding, attitude and behavior using different channels of media is of utmost importance in the health care industry. In general a Communication Coordinators duty involves the coordination and dissemination of pertinent information, and ensures that accurate, clear comprehensive messaging is conveyed to the public. Communication coordinators may use traditional, electronic, or social media for health care communication. In addition, they implement marketing and communication strategies, and determine the level of media exposure around the globe. This type of representation plays a significant role in an organizations public persona and reputation. Although communication coordinators have a measure of autonomy by directing, media forums, and developing media relations they must comply with HIPAA regulations. First and foremost, HIPAA stands for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. HIPAA was enacted in order to more closely secure health information transferred from one facility or covered entity to the next through electronic exchange. The law states that patients must be given information on their rights concerning the release of patient health information and how it will be used. Communication coordinators must contend with the advantages and the disadvantages of using traditional, electronic, and social media and deal with the effects of HIPPA and other regulations on the use of media and health communication.
