Obesity: The Growing Trend

What is Obesity? When most people think of a person with Obesity they think of some one that is fat, slow, overweight, probably have diabetes, or just plan unhealthy. Actually obesity is when a person bodyweight is twenty percent more than it should be or if their body mass index is at greater than 30. Obesity is a growing trend in American. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention states that “Obesity is common, serious and costly. In 2009-2010, more than one-third of U.S. adults (35.7%) were obese.”(Obesity, 2013) Various forms of unhealthy foods and beverages are constantly being marketed through an assortment of advertisements which contribute in some way to the rising percentage of obesity in America. The growing Serving sizes and product portion is another method that is helping increase obesity in America.

The Marking of unhealthy food has been a large impact on the increase in obesity. How many people watch the National Football League (NFL) just for the commercials? Advertisement through commercials is a form of marketing. The increase screen time is the increase in exposure to commercials. Commercial targets your sense of sight and most people if something looks good they want it. Commercials usually made to be catchy or appealing to the mind. Business knows that people watch more television than ever before and they push their unhealthy foods to the target audience. Business usually use a catchy song, a celebrity, or something that just looks so good people just have to have it to push the unhealthy food they would like to sell. Children watch more television then everyone and everything that they see that looks good they want, which leads them to want junk food.
