raining employees to perform well is a key topic our book discuss as being able to gain optimal performance out of them. An excellent article [1] points out five simple steps that will aid in helping employees be successful:

build an internal training program

teach negotiation

fine tune presentation skills

create superior client management

teach networking

The number one item in the list I believe is one of the most important items a company can focus on in today’s industry. Training your employees on the tools and company workings is key in a successful company working. This will allow for a smooth flow of a company and workings from within. With this handled it will allow for products to be created with ease and without problems as well.

The second most important tool out of the list that management can provide to employees is fine tune presentation skills. As engineers, we do spend a majority of our time working on projects and in the lab and not in front of the customer. The time in front of the customer though is essential. We want to give the customer a sense of confidence in what is being done and created for them. These presentation skills will allow this to happen. The presentation skills and the knowledge of the product being created can then allow the engineer to present a strong idea to the customer.
