World Current Events

There are many major current events that are happening in our world today. Many of them have a huge impact on our lives and the future. The two events that I will be going over are how Syria submits initial disclosure of chemical weapons program and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. First I will discuss the chemical weapons program in Syria and then followed by Mr. Lavrov and why Russia has accused the U.S. for trying to “blackmail” them.

Syria has begun detailing its chemical weapons arsenal, releasing an “initial declaration” of its stockpile. The international chemical weapons watchdog has been charged with overseeing the removal of al-Assad’s chemical weapons arsenal from Syria part of a U.S. – Russian plan aimed at averting American military airstrikes. This jibes with a timeline in the U.S. –Russian deal forged last week in Geneva, Switzerland, to begin destroying Syria’s chemical arsenal. Under the Geneva framework deal, al-Assad was given a week beginning last Saturday to declare the weapons program. This process is usually 60 days, but do to the extraordinary concern about Syria’s weapons it has been cut to only 7 days. Once the group has received Syria’s full declaration, we have to go through it in detail and plan how to conduct the on-the-ground inspection mission, to verify the accuracy of the declaration and put seals on all materials to make sure they are secure, but the Syria regime is moving around its stockpile of chemical weapons, leaving the U.S. trying to figure out what al-Assad will do next with his deadly arsenal.

Russia has accused the U.S. of trying to blackmail it into letting the U.N. Security Council authorize force against the Syrian government if Damascus fails to give up its chemical weapons. The U.S. and its allies have been pressing the Council to adopt a Syria resolution under Chapter 7 of the U.N. Charter, which would permit enforcement through military action. U.S. officials told...
