Genetically Vigorous Populations Paper
There are many things that are involved with the importance of genetic diversity in populations. Also there are many values that underlie population management. Finally, zoos, aquariums, and botanical gardens all have roles in conservation.
The Importance of Genetic Diversity
When taking a closer look at our environment and different ecosystems, one will notice an abundant amount of plants and animals. Many of these plants and animals look different from one another, perform certain tasks, and provide nourishment to their ecosystems. Even though they are different from each other, these living organisms can still co-exist in the same environment. They can also adapt to the changing environment around them. This is called genetic diversity. “Genetic diversity is the variation of heritable characteristics present in a population of the same species” (What is Genetic Diversity, 2011, para 1). It is very essential to evolution because it allows species to adapt to a new environment and fight off parasites. Genetic Diversity is important in populations because it works hand-in-hand with biodiversity. If one type of species is removed from its environment, the cycle will break down, and the community becomes dominated by a single species. In other words, genetic diversity is important to a population because it helps keep the biodiversity in that community. This helps to maintain a stable and diverse environment. If genetic diversity is removed from a population, this will lead to a loss in biological diversity, which helps species adapt to the environment.
Genetic Diversity in Plants and Animals
Genetic diversity is very important when thinking about plants and animals. It helps to maintain long healthy lives of these species. Genetic Diversity supports long term viability, biodiversity, and biotic integrity in all plants and animals.
