Before the known written word humans have been using yeast for “magical” properties. The ancient Egyptians have been noted to use yeast as noted by Archaeologists digging in Egyptian ruins found early grinding stones and baking chambers for yeast-raised bread, as well as drawings of 4,000-year-old bakeries and breweries.(nasa.gov) The Latin word Saccharum means sugar while Myces means fungus. Saccharomyces cerevisiae is the scientific name we use.

Energy is made from sugar by one of two ways, aerobic cellular respiration or fermentation(Amscopub, 2011).

The first mentioned is aerobic cellular respiration and its catalyst is oxygen : C6H12O6 + 6O2 -------------------> 6CO2 + 6H2O + ~38 ATP. This seems more natural and common. And the second is fementation where there is a lack of oxygen and the yeast “adapts” to this change and uses a different process/formula to obtain sugar for energy: C6H12O6====> 2(CH3CH2OH) +2(CO2) +Energy .

Both energy products are important for they both produce the same ATP and CO2. There are different types of yeast spiecies and some are asexual or by budding.

Introduction

The goal of this lab is to test a hypothesis though experimentation. To achieve this task the individual will analyze the collected data and interpret the information collected during the steps of this experiment. The lab will consist of four different condition. There will be a food surplus environment. There will be a predation environment. There will be limited reproduction environment. And lastly a control environment as a reference environment. The samples were assessed at 0, 24, 48,72, 96 hours.

* Hypothesis

There is an expectation that all environments will produce a large populations except for the food surplus where there should be a substantial growth pattern in the population. The logic behind this assumption is because of the pure sugar. And sugar in the test solution will...
