Introduction
The National Zoo was created by an Act of Congress in 1889 for “the advancement of science and the instruction and recreation of the people.” In 1890 it became a part of the Smithsonian Institution. Three well-known individuals drew up plans for the Zoo: Samuel Langley, third Secretary of the Smithsonian; William T. Hornaday, noted conservationist and head of the Smithsonian's vertebrate division; and Frederick Law Olmsted, the premier landscape architect of his day. Together they designed a new zoo to exhibit animals for the public and to serve as a refuge for wildlife, such as bison and beaver, which were rapidly vanishing from North America.
Mission Statement
The National Zoo’s mission is to demonstrate leadership in animal care, science, education, and sustainability.
Organizational Design
The Zoo offers a Wildlife Studies Certificate Program. Through the programs, adults learn about connections between worldwide ecological processes and the conservation and research done at the Zoo. The Zoo also offers preschool and children classes. These classes are offered continuously; dates and times can be found online at the Zoo’s website. Participants can register by creating and online account. The Zoo’s customers are typically employees looking to gain additional knowledge or obtain certifications, adults and children who are interested in learning the concept of zoology, and teachers or college students.
