Religion in Public Schools

Religion is a specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a number of persons or sects. When it comes to religion expression in public schools, it is a very diverse subject that has both positive and negative impacts on others. The argument as to whether or not it should be allowed is a very sensitive topic for all those that would be involved, such as the school staff board, teachers and students. “The ground rules for religious expression in schools were set by The Secretary of Education at the direction of President Bill Clinton in 1998.” (Adherents.com) It basically states that children are free to express themselves and even speak about their religion as long as they are not harassing other students. It states that students can gather before and after school in activities that deal with religion or group meetings.

Most individuals who are for the expression of religion in public schools believe that if it were completely banished it would take away from the students freedom. This would allow them to form into the mold of the general student population, which includes non religious students. I personally feel that as long as the student is not being overly dramatic in their expressions that is should be allowed. Students shouldn’t have to leave their beliefs at the front door when they enter a public school building. While in attendance most students especially in high schools are subject to the influences of others which can misguide them.

If students aren’t allowed to practice their religion or beliefs it can really take away from the individual. There are many chaotic issues in higher grades of school such as teen pregnancy, drugs and underage drinking. Those that are for religious expression could argue that it could possibly prevent many of these problems from occurring, having a more positive outcome on children and their success.
