As a teacher stands at the front of the room delivering a lesson, it can be easy to get wrapped up in the day to day routine of just going through the motions without taking the time to really question if the students are truly understanding the material. Teachers need to use different types of questioning procedures every day, in every lesson to check for understanding. The questions can be used to gauge the effectiveness of the lesson; if the students understand and are ready to move forward or if they need to go back over some point of the learning. Without this formative assessment the class can be pushed further without true understanding and this can cause a host of problems.

It is vital that student know that what they are doing is correct. This can foster a feeling of comfort and understanding; something that can be used to build future learning on. Learners need to know if what they are thinking is on the right track so that they can move forward in their learning with confidence. A teacher who asks good questions and accepts answers with grace will help students learn in a more effective manner.
