Raise the Driving Age

The driving age has been a hot topic around America for quite some time now. The law in forty four states is that you have to be at least sixteen years of age to retain a regular driving license. According to 2pass.co.uk there are six states that have their driving license age at least fourteen year six months to fifteen years six months of age. So the majority of the states allow the driving license age to be sixteen but should it be pushed higher? In 2009, about 3,000 teens aged fifteen to nineteen were killed in motor vehicle crashes according to cdc.gov. First year licensed teens are at a higher risk to crash than any other group of people. So there is a big problem with having the driver’s license age at sixteen or lower and something needs to be done.

My proposed change in the law at hand is o have the minimum drivers license age changed to eighteen years old. When you have a kid aged fourteen to sixteen driving, their brain is not at the same maturity level as an eighteen year old drivers brain would be at. Teens would often underestimate dangerous situations and would react slower than older counterparts. At the age of fifteen kids must start going to a driver’s education class for two months. There they would gain their basic knowledge of how to operate a motor vehicle and learn techniques to minimize dangerous situations. After they complete two months of schooling they would next have to perform one hundred hours of work driving in the daytime with an instructor, starting within a week of completing the school. Once the 100 hours of daytime driving is complete one hundred hours of nighttime must be completed next. This is so the driver can get used to how the roads work during the daytime and nighttime hours. For each year after completing all of the proposed work each participant must go to the local DMV and to two thirty minute driving test within six months of each other.
