RQ 10.5

The Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) is a tool that defines a project and groups the project’s discrete work elements in a way that helps organize and define the total work scope of the project. It is a decomposition of all the work necessary to complete a project. A WBS is arranged in a hierarchy and constructed to allow for clear and logical groupings, either by activities or deliverables. It represents the work identified in the approved project scope statement and serves as an early foundation for schedule development and cost estimating. Project managers typically will develop a WBS before creating a detailed project schedule. Possible alternative plans can be designed to organize a project or task to be completed. There are two different types of WBS: deliverable- oriented WBS and process- centered WBS.

RQ 10.7

The goals of developing a WBS and Dictionary are for the project team to logically plan out the project to completion, and to collect the information about work that needs to be done for a project. Finally to organize activities into manageable components that will achieve project objectives.

In a WBS, every level item has a unique assigned number so that work can be identified and tracked over time. A WBS may have varying numbers of decomposition levels, but there is a general scheme for how to number each level so that tasks are uniquely numbered and correctly summarized. Level 1is the top level of the WBS and is usually the project name. All other levels are subordinate to this level. Level 2 is the summary level. The third level comprises the subcomponents to each level 2 summary element. The levels continue with subordinate levels are assigned for all work required for the entire project.
