* Abstract

In recent years, emotional intelligence (EI) has been considerably gaining the attention of many researchers who identify it as a key skill needed for individual’s success in their lives and careers. This paper explains what is meant by EI and highlights its importance within the organizational context. An emotional intelligent person is someone who possesses the five dimensions of EI: self-awareness, self-management, self-motivation, empathy and social skills. The first three personal (self-) dimensions are needed for a person to understand his/her own feelings and control them in a positive manner to develop utmost motivation for a better performance. The latter two dimensions contribute to the person’s social skills which allow him/her to feel with others and be able to manage their feelings as well. Studies have shown that EI prevailing in the workplace is associated with higher work satisfaction, innovative contribution and positive interaction which all contribute to successful performance. It is specifically an underlying critical competency to be possessed by leaders; it assists them in facing the increasing challenges of today’s industries to achieve the best out of themselves and their teams for an effective and outstanding performance.
