Cultural Dimensions: Nigeria

Nigeria is a very culturally and ethnically diverse country. They have their own national sport, which is highly recognized and respected throughout the country. Their business dress code is very strict, expecting you to look good. Unfortunately, the country does have some major gender issues towards women. Nigeria is also very socially active, with a heavy focus being on food and the arts. In relation to arts, Nigerian music is also very diverse, with a wide range of genres and styles. Finally, business etiquette and formal greetings are quite foreign compared to the United State’s style, especially when it comes to meetings. Overall, Nigeria is a country with a very strong cultural sense, but is very different from the United States.

Nigeria did not have much in the way of sports initially. It wasn’t until around 1963, when the National Sports Commision (NSC) began to function, with a man named Abraham Ordia as it’s secretary that sports really began to take serious roots (OnlineNigeria). This period, however, was only significant in laying the groundwork for sports to begin, and their only real achievement was the qualification of the Nigerian Green Eagles in the Olympic Games held in Mexico in 1968 (OnlineNigeria). In 1973, however, Nigeria hosted the 2nd All-Africa games in Lagos. It also tried to use this as a way of discovering athletes to represent the country try in continental and international meets, and the first meeting in Lagos attracted about 6,000 athletes. (OnlineNigeria). During the 70’s, Nigeria’s now-national sports team, their football team, began to gain reputation with major achievements as well. Nigeria's senior football team was able to win a gold medal in the 2nd All-Africa games, while the country's contingent to the games won an overall Second position on the medals table, and in 1976 and 1977 saw the country tasting victories in continental championships through the IICC Shooting Stars and Rangers...
