Unit 7 Application: Software Development Methodologies

There are several approaches to software development that an organization can use. “The systems development life cycle (SDLC) is the traditional systems development method used by organizations for large IT projects such as IT infrastructure” (Turban & Volonino, 2011). This process can help develop a student management system. The system will need to contain a variety of information for registered students. The development process for the student management system may take some time but it will contain the entire required components.

The software development has several steps as a part of the development process. Systems analysis and systems design are steps two and three of the process. “The systems analysis stage produces the following information: (1) strengths and weaknesses of the existing system, (2) functions that the new system must have to solve the business problem and (3) user information requirements for the new system” (Turban & Volonino, 2011). These two steps work hand and hand when developing a system. Once you have completed the systems analysis, the next step is the system design. The systems design will help the system completed the task. “The deliverable of the systems design phase is the technical design that specifies the following: system outputs, inputs, and user interfaces, hardware, software, databases, telecommunications, personnel, and procedures, how these components are integrated” (Turban & Volonino, 2011). The systems design brings all the business components together from the systems analysis.

The information system requirements are important but they can be difficult to determine. The system requirements are what the system needs to perform the business processes. They can also redefine the business goals and make those goals operational. This can be difficult to determine because of all the different needs of a business. There also can be a lot of...
