Exercise 1:

Dissolved oxygen is oxygen that is trapped in a fluid, such as water. Since virtually every living organism requires oxygen to survive, it is a necessary component of water systems such as streams, lakes and rivers in order to support aquatic life. The dissolved oxygen is measure in units of ppm—or parts per million. Examine the data in Table 2 showing the amount of dissolved oxygen present and the number of fish observed in the body of water the sample was taken from; finally, answer the questions below.

1. Based on the information in Table 2, what patterns do you observe?

- I observed that when there is 0 fish being observed that there is also 0 oxygen being observed. There is also a chance that the more fish then the more dissolved oxygen there was.

2. Develop a hypothesis relating to the amount of dissolved oxygen measured in the water sample and the number of fish observed in the body of water.

- When there are more fish present in being observed then there is more dissolved oxygen as well.

3. What would your experimental approach be to test this hypothesis?

- My experimental approach to this would be to go to a small pond and test different sections of the pond and report results of the different areas that the dissolved oxygen were in.

4. What are the independent and dependent variables?

- According to this scenario I would be confident in saying that the Independent Variable is the Dissolved Oxygen. Therefore the Dependent Variable would be the Fish being observed.

5. What would be your control?

- In this particular experiment I was able to conclude that there is NO control group. The fish will swim as they please to wherever part of the pond they choose.

6. What type of graph would be appropriate for this data set? Why?

- For this experiment a line graph would be...
