a. How does http://www.Zappos.com build human and social capital?

Zappos.com builds human and social capital through a lot of its Family Core Values. The first core value that helps build the human capital is #5 Pursue growth and learning, this aids the concept of building human capital through readiness to learn, intelligence/abilities and knowledge. Zappos.com has a family library also that they not only share with their employees but with their customers also. The next core value that they use that creates human and social capital is #6 Build open and honest relationships with communication. This value helps promote the motivation and commitment, honesty and emotional maturity of employees. This also helps build teamwork, camaraderie, cooperation and helps build networks within the workplace. The #7 core value at Zappos.com also states that they will build a positive team and family spirit this aids in all the previous factors also.

Zappos.com is truly a unique company that constantly is building human and social capital through its visions, values, ethics and ultimately its strategic assumption.

b. What evidence of a 21st-century organization, based on Table 1-3, can you find in the http://www.Zappos.com case?

The philosophy at Zappos.com is that “we’re willing to make short-term sacrifices (including lost revenue or profits) if we believe that the long term benefits are worth it.” They stand behind their company culture and core values and believe that this is a long-term benefit. This idea embraces the 21st-century manager by sharing and broadening access for greater understanding and also views the people as the primary resource. Zappos.com also used their own employees to develop the 10 core values they live by, this shows that they want broad based input for joint decisions within the company.
