The Hunger Games

The “Hunger Games” is a 2012 American science fiction adventure film directed by Gary Ross, based on the novel “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins. The story takes place in a dystopian post-apocalyptic future in the nation of Panem, where certain boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 18 must participate in the Hunger Games, which is a televised annual event in which the "tributes" are required to fight to the death until there is one remaining crowned victor. Protagonist Katniss Everdeen volunteers to take her younger sister's place in the games. Joined by her district's male tribute Peeta Mellark, Katniss travels to the Capitol to train for the Hunger Games under the guidance of former victor Haymitch Abernathy. To those in the Capitol, this televised broadcast is a form of entertainment but to those in the districts it is required to watch as a punishment and reminder of a past uprising. Throughout Katniss’ death-defying journey to return to her home of district 12, she faces impossible choices that pose her survival against the greater good of humanity and love. This movie may seem very gruesome, but that is only if you watch it at an apparent level. If you look deeper into the story, you can see it as much more than that.

The Excessive use of characterization in this film prominent……. This film has many possible themes. For instance, the inequality between the rich and poor and suffering as entertainment, but the most influential theme I believe is the importance of appearances. Throughout the novel, Katniss and her team use her external appearance, including what she says and how she behaves, to control how other people identify her. At the reaping ceremony, for example, she won’t allow herself to cry in front of the cameras because she doesn’t want to give off the impression of being weak, which would express her as an easy target.
