Abstract

Case Study #1: Diabetes Hannah is a 10-year-old girl who has recently been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. She is a 4th grade student at Hendricks Elementary School. Prior to her diagnosis, Hannah was very involved in sports and played on the girls’ volleyball team. Her mother is concerned about how the diagnosis will affect Hannah.

Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

“According to the American Diabetes Association,” Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, and was previously known as juvenile diabetes. Only 5% of people with diabetes have this form of the disease” (American Diabetes Association)

What is Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus is the body’s inability to produce insulin due to the autoimmune obliteration of the beta cells in the pancreas.The absence of insulin leads to increased blood and urine glucose. “Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. With the help of insulin therapy and other treatments, even young children can learn to manage their condition and live long, healthy lives.” (American Diabetes Association)

Signs and Symptoms

Often times there are signs and symptoms that indicate Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus such as; Polyphagia (increased hunger), polydipsia (increased thirst), polyuria (frequent urination), xerostomia (dry mouth), sudden weight lost and fatigue. If you should ever have any of these signs be sure to make an appointment to see your regular physician.

Cause and Diagnoses. Though the exact cause of type 1 diabetes is unknown, mostly like it would be considered as an autoimmune disorder and most likely is passed from through families.
