Situation Analysis
LeisureCo is a themed, largely open-air, entertainments complex which is less than ten years old. Despite being acquired by a large leisure public limited company, on site management continues to run as a separate business with its own working culture. The LeisureCo complex has high year-round fixed overheads mainly due to maintenance activities throughout the year and a short season from June to September. Even during the peak period, attendances fluctuate greatly, peaking at weekends and holiday months. Employees are expected to operate themed rides and retail outlets and entertain as well as help the customers. The workforce is largely seasonal and comprises mainly of students. 500 students are required for the park’s operations but only a few of these remain for the entire season. Only a small number return the following year and many only remain for a few weeks. As the park functions continuously for seven days a week during the main season, the workers cannot be expected to occupy the same job every day. Hence new workers must be recruited constantly and trained rapidly also they must be flexible to do a wide variety of jobs. The seasonal staff is organized in teams under experienced leaders who are either permanent employees or older seasonal staff. The permanent employees consist mainly of management and administration staff. The main role of the Personnel department at LeisureCO is recruitment and training.
