Pollution review and summary

The City Council has requested a report that will recommending steps that the City can take to address the pollution issue that is on the uptake within the city and surrounding areas. In this summary, you will find the points that I have studied and found will have the most immediate impact on the pollution issues. These issues will not only reduce pollution, but also reduce carbon emissions that are increasingly becoming a troublesome issue with our metropolitan area.

Improving road conditions

In 2013, deteriorating road conditions cost drivers in Michigan 7.7 million dollars. (“TRIP,” 2014) Poor road conditions cause extra wear and tear on vehicles, increase traffic, and also increase rates of insurance for the drivers in areas at higher risk for vehicular accidents. By redoing the freeways and main roads that have already been neglected for far too long, the council can proceed with making improvements to the design and layout of these roads, and have them be the beginning steps of making a cleaner and greener city. By redoing the freeways heading in to the city, it would give the opportunity to add a “High Occupancy Vehicle” lane (HOV) which would be for vehicles with 3 or more passengers to encourage carpooling. On the city’s main roads, the addition of a public transit/bicycle lane would allow for alternative travel that would lessen the amount of vehicles on the road, therefor lowering the amount of emissions put in to the air. The public would have to be notified of the affected areas of construction before any work on the roads could commence, so they have ample time to prepare for delays or reroute their commute for the period of time the roads are under construction.
