Duck and Cover

There are many things in the world that can harm an individual every day. In the 1950s, a film was introduced to children about nuclear attacks. Even though that was over 50 years ago, and the threat was nuclear attacks the same is true today with terrorism.

The film entitled “Duck and Cover”, was created to demonstrate and show children what to do in the event of a nuclear attack on United States territory. This film stars a cartoon turtle by the name of Bert. In the beginning of the film, Bert the Turtle shows what everyone not just children should do during a nuclear strike. Just like all other safety precautions were taken and taught in schools with earthquakes and fires, the same was done for an atomic bomb drop. This film shows the mindset of the United States at that time. Because of the nuclear weapons that was used to bomb Nagasaki and Hiroshima during World War II, the United States was expecting vengeance. This must have been a horrific feeling. The government believe the danger was so great that they now needed to teach children to prepare for a nuclear strike. This similar feeling is how the U.S. felt during the terrorism act of 9/11.

The country was left feeling defenseless and livid. The fact that enemies could harm us on our own soil without any warning was a great fear. Because the 9/11 terrorism attack caused so much fear in the U.S., the war on terror was declared. Both, a terrorist attack and a nuclear attack are the same in many ways. The element of surprise was the bases of both kinds of attacks. No one knows or expects these attacks to happen. Fear is another similarity in both nuclear and terrorism attacks. Fear is a very strong persuader and motivation. Fear motivates and causes countries to declare war or to surrender a war.

The differences of the two are few in between. One of the differences between terrorism and nuclear attack...
