Introduction

Understanding one’s culture is extremely important in understanding who we are and where we came from. This paper will focus on the various aspects of culture looking specifically at Music, Folklore and Festivals. Question one would give a brief overview on the various aspects of culture that are particularly unique to St Kitts-Nevis and question two will highlight two of these areas, Folklore and Music. Question three is a brief history into Festival de Capisterre, one of the community festivals in the Federation. Question 4 will provide the reader with insight into how The Actor, a popular sport usually played during carnival and question 5 is an original poem by the writer.

Question 1

“A people without a knowledge of their past is like a tree with no roots.” Culture for St Kitts Nevis can be defined as our history, practices, customs, patterns, arts, beliefs and norms that helps define and develop our identity. It represents our past, present and future and it is how we choose to uniquely identify ourselves from the rest of the world and enhance our understanding of who we are and where we came from. In other words, culture is a way of life. Our culture includes; music, language, folklore, religion, attitude, customs, food, festivals, dress etc.
