Essays and the Work Environment
In today’s economy, communication tends to be at the forefront of most problems within an organization. Most managers and supervisors have a difficult time just trying to convey the right message to effectively get his or her point across. Works of literature can enhance the skills of communication and describe ideas and concepts in a manner in which employees can either understand or relate to. Not all literature is understandable to the layman; however, good or bad, literature does have its place in the work environment. In week four, various readings pinpoint problems and concerns in the work environment. Two stories which will be discussed are “Hatchet Man” and “Jobbed.” “Hatchet Man” is a story about an ogre of man who carried the nickname of “Hatchet Man” (Scheckner & Boyes, 2008). “Jobbed” details an investigation of missing parts within an automobile supplier, of which the wrong employee was accused and terminated (Scheckner & Boyes, 2008).
Preference of Essay
In retrospect, I preferred reading “Jobbed” over the work of “Hatchet Man.” “Jobbed” is an essay I can easily relate to and understand. In the essay, a hard-working man, who knew the process and organization like the back of his hand, was wrongly accused of taking some automobile parts. He was well-liked by his colleagues and completed an honest day’s work each shift. Without completing a thorough investigation, the manager terminated the employee, whose name was Andy Griffin. This type of unjust punishment occurs in many businesses today. Too many managers are quick to point the finger and terminate an employee without doing the proper research. “Jobbed” did not particularly pique my interest as it seemed to relate to the story of a bully or a person no one simply wanted to be around.
