The Diverse Nature of Psychology Paper

To better understand and diversity within the field of psychology is to grasp the importance of the role psychological diversity plays in allowing psychologists to focus on behavior in a variety of ways. Throughout this paper we will discuss the diverse nature of psychology as a discipline while evaluating the influence of diversity on psychology’s concepts. Identifying two subcategories of subdiciplines and two subtopics within psychology and examining how subtopics and subdiciplines are applied to other disciplines and venues in contemporary society. “The discipline of psychology attempts to predict, explain, and describe the aspects of human functioning and also to help change, and optimize the lives of others” (Plante, 2005, p. 4).

Subdiciplines and Subtopics

“Psychology is the scientific study of behavior and mental processes” (Feldman, 2010, p. 1). The phrases mental and behavior processes comprehend an “immense diversity of human functioning; however, psychologists in the past try to describe, explain, and predict human processes and behavior as well as helping to optimize and change the lives of individuals”(Feldman, 2010, p. 2).“In the beginning, psychology rapidly advanced as an independent discipline of study and that the two main principles that justify psychology as an independent discipline”(Stanovich, 2010, p. 4).

If an individual were to research the APA he or she would find 54 different divisions, defined by area of study, research, and area of practice (Stanovich, 2010) psychology because of this enumeration characterized by individual behaviors while communicating only a limited aspect of behavior.

Environmental psychology “studies the roles of individuals have in the conversation or destruction or our environment” (Stanovich, 2010, p. 1). “Hence, cumulative behaviors of individuals affect environmental quality” (Stanovich, 2010, p. 1). Environmental psychology...
