The Art of Music?

When we think about art we think about paintings: the Mona Lisa, the Starry Night, the Scream. Each one of these pieces of work is known for its beauty and its emotional power over those who have seen them. Art is defined typically in a visual form such as painting or sculptures, but is it truly limited to just visual aspects. Janicaud said, “Art uplifts, demands and transfigures” (J 74). Which is why when I think about art, I think of something that can move me. It does not have to a picture, a painting, or a sculpture; it can be more than just visual it can be sound, and by sound I mean music.

With so many different components put into a song how can it not be art? The melody, the tones, the beat, and the lyrics all come together to make something so beautiful and powerful. Music has the ability to change a person’s mood in an instant. It can trigger emotions, and has the power to trigger memories. Lyrics can also remind us of people and intensifies the moments we once shared with them.

When I was younger I never really thought of music as being art. It used to be all about the cute boys in the band. It was not until I got older and started to listen to the lyrics where I then began to think of music as being something powerful and artistic. A song that I hold very dear to my heart is called “Yo Te Extrañare”, which is a Spanish song that translates to “I’ll Miss You”. The melody and soft tone in this song makes me feel sad, and the lyrics remind me constantly of my deceased grandmother whom I was very close with. The song itself reminds me of her funeral. Although this song brings back a memory I wish I didn’t have it reminds me of my grandmother every time I listen to it. The beauty of this song’s lyrics is that it hits two very strong emotions. The first being sadness as it reminds me of her not being on earth, and the second being joy. The song reminds me of all the good and bad times we had together. Memories I will never forget,...
