Policy Education: Making a Difference in the Public Arena

The article was proposed visions and mission statements of the American Home Economics Association (AHEA). AHEA is noted at the source of knowledge and voice for families and individuals well being. This article shares essential ideas that concern the planning policy education initiatives. It also mentions how some home economists manage policy education.

Public policy education is the education regarding public issues, and the processes for active participation. Hahn came up with this definition, as well as how it reflects Thomas Jefferson’s philosophy. Decisions over policy happen within the local communities, and also on the state and federal levels. Functions of policy education include: the expanding of one’s knowledge of policy issues, supporting participants understanding the policy making processes, and the encouragement of participants to test strategies. The definition of advocacy is working for a particular solution to a public problem. It assists that certain positions are filled and great promotions for that position is supported. Educators that fulfill these roles are often questioned about how unbiased their information really is. These advocates are brought together by policy educators to discuss certain issues.

Policy issues only last a certain amount of time, depending on how much is known and how involved people are. There are rationalized stages that are used as a guide to track the movement of the process. The eight stages are: 1) individuals express their worries over a given incident, 2) the involvement of people and recognizing the numerous reactions about the issue, 3) the problem is defined, 4) different resolutions are noticed and refined, 5) the consequences, 6) individuals decide where and how a decisions will be made, 7) a decision is finally made, 8) people evaluate the results after some time.
