Buses for Boozers

When a teenager hears the word “college,” one of the first things that comes to their mind is alcohol. With today’s culture and ideals that teenagers should live for the moment, this is not likely to change anytime soon. Also, some of the most popular things to do in college are to cruise around in an automobile or drive to parties and bars. Alcohol and automobiles make for a deadly combination, and college students are notorious for their involvement in fatal drunk driving accidents. We cannot just sit back and continue to allow students to make the horrific decision to drink alcohol and drive. This problem can easily be reduced by innovating a line of drunk buses, which is a service that many colleges have been adopting lately. These buses operate for a few hours on weekend nights, transporting drunken students to and from campus free of charge, in order to minimize drunk driving. Instituting a solid system of drunk buses would prevent a pretty good amount of drunk driving, making UNC Wilmington a safer place for everyone on and off of the road.

Students drink and drive for many various reasons. As idiotic as this may sound, some do it because riding around in a car with a drunk driver is fun to them. When asked why students drink and drive, one student did not hesitate to explain the joys of riding in a car with a drunk driver, saying “The combination of riskiness, adrenaline and unpredictability always makes for a great Friday night.” While some may say that introducing drunk buses would not eliminate this means of entertainment, it would actually provide an alternate opportunity for students to ride around and still have fun with more people. Drunk buses would contain elements such as music, social opportunities, and the basic unpredictability of the modern college life. When asked whether they would ride a drunk bus at UNC Wilmington, the same student replied “Yes, it may even become the cool new thing to do for some students, and most...
