Safety Inside Nuclear Plant
Safety is taken very serious by employees working in nuclear power plants. I
am going to start with the Fukushima nuclear plant accident. This Tsunami hit the
core of the power plant’s electrical power. When the water started flooding the
background leaving the plant with no way to cool the nuclear fuel rods. On March
11, 2011, Japan was struck by a 9.0 earthquake, tsunami, and disaster that
created a nuclear meltdown as three reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi power
plant facility was crippled when the coding system went out. The disaster has
killed at least 1600 people. The rules of cleaning this disaster up went out the
window. The Japanese governor hired homeless men living around the
Sendi Station to clean up the radioactive area around the plant not caring about
their health. The workers were paid minimum wage. There were 733 companies
performing work for the ministry of environment. The Fukushima accident brought
action to the nuclear plant world. Different plants paid attention to what had
happened and they started checking their own plants for a disaster like this one
that imposed contamination on water while innocent people lived in the
environment.
Japan has had knowledge in the past that it was a concern about the nuclear
plant being able to withstand seismic activity. However, nothing was done to bulk
up around the plants surrounding the water.
“The disaster at Fukushima Dai-ichi released 15,000 terabecquerels of highly
radioactive cesium 137 along with radioactive material(Eccleston,2012).” I would
hope after this accident that every nuclear plant around the world would be more
aware of safety concerns and take the necessary preventive measures to avoid an
accident from occurring.
