Severe Congential Vision Impairment

The purpose of this paper is to present a 12 year old girl who experiences severe congential vision impairment. Within the content, I will analyze the disorder, determine specific disabilities associated, and provide the various complications involved. The financial effects, the assistance within the educational system, treatment options, rehabilitation, and appropriate interventions will be provided. Lastly, the creation of an IEP (Individualized Education Plan) with goals and objectives will be included.

Once a child is diagnosed with severe congentail vision impairment, immediate attention is imperative. One of our five senses, vision, allows us to access learning about everything that occurs in the world around us. If a child’s vision loss is gone undetected, a wide range of skills that should be developed by the child will be delayed tremendously. A child who is visually impaired can perform various activities that children without vision impairments perform; they just have to learn how in different ways and the use of different tools. Due to the fact that they are numerous different causes of visual impairment, the degree of impairment will depend on the child’s particular eye condition, the affected aspect of the visual system, and the amount of correction that is possible. The legal definition of vision loss or blindness is "Visual acuity of 20/200 or worse in the better eye with corrective lenses (20/200 means that a person at 20 feet from an eye chart can see what a person can see at 200 feet); OR Visual field restriction to 20 degrees diameter or less (tunnel vision) in the better eye." (Definition of Legal blindness, 2010). Learning is definitely ahievable for children with visual impairments, they will just have to use other senses and methods....
