When American service members deploy to combat zones, and are physically involved in combat, they return home a different person than they were before they left. While deployed their finances will increase, and their bank accounts will grow rather large. When they return home they don’t really think about any consequences or the future, they are happy they are alive and start spending money, and will over a period of time incur large debts. A large percentage of soldiers select to leave the military after they have been deployed multiple times. They find out rather quickly when applying for employment that they are either under educated, lack job related experience, or the employer has stereotyped them as having mental issues related to being in the military. The fact that a soldiers well being has been severely impacted while deployed is always going to be the key issue (Wallis, 2007). Service members will have to live with the memories of their fellow soldiers and or local civilians being killed whether they were directly or indirectly involved. These memories are burned into their head and are a price they will pay for the rest of their lives. War has a negative impact on a soldier’s finances, future employment and their well-being.

Active duty service members receive a pay check every two weeks regardless if they are on leave, late for work or at home sick (Wright, 2008). This is one of the many benefits of serving one’s country. Needless to say the pay isn’t the best, and every service member knows they will never be rich nor will they be poor. When they deploy their pay will almost double for the months that they are in a designated combat zone. There are not a lot of things they can buy when they are deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan.
