Right versus Wrong: My Interpretation

My parents always told me from a young age to follow my instincts and identify what my gut is guiding me towards. That uncomfortable and sickening feeling of my stomach turning around and around into one large knot is the key in knowing it is a wrong decision to follow through with. At least one time each day I hear my Mother’s voice in the back of my head with one of her famous sayings. If I were debating whether or not to go to class, I would hear her telling me to go to class because I have a responsibility and a duty to learn and be educated each and every day. On the other hand, in deciding if something is right to follow through with I usually think about the consequences. What will be the repercussions of my action or decision? Would my parents approve of my decision? Would I be proud of what I did and be comfortable telling them about it? I am usually reasonable when it comes to being rational and positive decision-making. Though, sometimes a gut feeling isn’t the best way to determine whether or not the choice I am about to make is right or wrong. There are rules and guidelines that I should follow, though I do not always abide by them.

Many people that I know of are also very trustworthy of their gut instincts, as am I. Though, the idea of there being specific “guidelines” or “rules” that should dictate our decisions and distinguish between right and wrong do somewhat exist. If I completely took my stomach out of the picture, I would be left with mindful common sense and fairness. No matter what, my Mom will always have an impact on my decisions so she is a factor that cannot be removed. Mindful common sense would be thinking of short and long-term consequences of my actions, the affect it will have on those around me, and the way I will feel during and after committing the act I was in the process of questioning.
