I. Introduction & Background

The HPV Vaccine has been causing some controversial issues in healthcare. Parents and even healthcare providers are concerned about the overall safety of the HPV vaccine. People are contracted HPV at rapid rates and the numbers are high for those diagnosed each year.

HPV is known as the Human Papillomavirus and is the most common sexually transmitted disease. Both men and women can contract HPV but women less than 25 years of age have the highest rates of infection. The Human Papillomavirus is quite different than HIV and HSV (also known as Herpes). HPV comes in different forms which can include genital warts and various cancers. The virus can be given from one person to another without visible signs or symptoms.

According to the CDC, there are approximately 20 million people in the United States who are infected with HPV and there are 6.2 million new cases every year. CDC also states that there a little over 10,000 women in the United States who are diagnosed cervical cancer each year and approximately 360,000 people in the United States who are diagnosed with genital warts each year.
