On April 19, 2011 Sony was at the end result of one of the largest hacking scams done in history. One hundred millions customers’ personal information, street address and credit card information were hacked and stolen in one single attack. There were a few different reasons that this happen to Sony, some believe it was a direct result of a law suit Sony had filed against one George Hotz one of the world’s best known hackers. Sony’s board chairman critics the United States Congress for the security breakdown, when in all reality it was only Sony fault. Most experts in the computer security field did not buy into Sony’s excuse; of they were a target of a very carefully planned and highly sophisticated criminal cyber attack. Sony failed to maintain their security measures by having an unwillingness to spend the proper resources on the security measures needed, followed by a lack of training, carelessness and outdated software. There were a lot of people, organizational and technology factors that help lead to these problems. Sony’s lax security allowed an organization to perform a standard SQL on the primitive security hole that gave them the ability to get whatever information they wanted. The U.S. Secret Service issued a report saying: the vast majority of attacks on database were not highly difficult”, Sony did not encrypt their user’s information due to trying to save money and not properly hiring enough IT’s. The people that contributed were the higher up at Sony who was unwilling to spend the extra resources and money to protect their customers from hackers such as “The Anonymous Group” and “LulzSec”. The LulzSec eventually came forward to claim they conducted the attack on Sony, but did not issue a reason for them hacking Sony’s system. The impact this Sony data felt from the hacking is well over 170 million dollars a year place associated legal costs from having to put in a more effective privacy protections though an outside company.
