Major Characteristics of the Empire of Sargon the Great, the Assyrian, and the Persian Empire

There were a few different empires during the first civilizations. Among them was a civilization known as Sargon the Great. Sargon was a man known to historians as one of the first to build an empire. Sargon was named a Mesopotamian ruler during the 2350 B.C. time. Although legend has it that he ruled the whole world, Sargon conquered cities only from the Mediterranean to the Persian Gulf. A small city named Akkad appointed Sargon as there leader and shortly after he conquered the Sumerian cities. Sargon built the worlds first empire, which extended from the persian Gulf to the Mediterranean Sea (Perry, 10). He was the first to appoint leaders specific territories and appoint people known as governors to the different sections of the city. He also was one of the first to build an army for protection and strength amongst the city. Through this army he was able to conquer the Sumerian cities. He then later conquered the fertile crescent. After accomplishing this he was later known to historians as the founder of the Mesopotamian military tradition. This is one of the great accomplishments of this empire that has made this such an important time in history.

Later down the line in the ninth century B.C., empire building resumed with the Assyrians, a semitic people from the region around the upper Tigris River (Perry, 10). They took the time to set up campaigns to give more detail on how there operations would run and be more successful. There soldiers were more prepared then the rest protecting themselves by now wearing armor and having iron swords. The Assyrian kings believes that their gods commanded them to conquer and assisted them in their campaigns (Perry, 10). While building there new empire they were able to improve established messenger services, work on bigger irrigation projects to improve effective administration of there land space and promote prosperity.
