The “Last Resort” Law

The illusion that children’s behavior can be cured with a drug only gets everyone off the hook except the child. Kids are generally full of energy and lack self-discipline. Should we put every child in America on medication? It is important to know that children with ADHD are not bad children and do not blurt out in class, interrupt a conversation, or do things on a whim on purpose. They want to be better and like other children they just don’t know how to be. A child and even adults with ADHD cannot separate important from unimportant stimuli. (Firth, R., N.D., para. 6). There are no diagnostic laboratory tests, neurological assessments, or attentional assessments for diagnosing a child, only vague behavioral symptoms. Parents should seek alternative methods before putting their child on psychostimulant drugs or we need to introduce the “Last Resort” Law.

Three to seven percent of children may have ADHD. Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a chronic condition that involves millions of youngsters and often persists into adulthood. ADHD includes a combination of problems, such as difficulty sustaining attention, hyperactivity and impulsive behavior. Kids with ADHD also may fight with low self-esteem, troubled relationships and poor performance in school. Why do we feel it is necessary to drug our kids who are diagnosed with ADHD even knowing that this will not cure them? The medications only hide the conditions that are there. Is this safer than instructing them how to master these conditions all together? There are no laws to date that protect our children from doctors who give these medications out like candy. This is where I propose the “Last Resort” law. The doctors will have to wait one full year before prescribing any psychostimulant drugs.
