Reflection

In my reflection of transformative learning, it can be perceived as a transformational change that is a learning process which is brought on from a change in your life. The learning that takes place will last a life time and bring new meaning to an individual’s life. There are various steps that one will take towards transformational learning, the problem, facing the problem, finding answers, and adjusting it to your life. This can take a lot of thought and effort. According to Jack Mezirow there are seven phases that happen in the learning process. They are self-examination, dilemma, critical assessment of assumptions, recognizing that individuals have gone through a similar process, exploring a process, a plan of action, and restoration.

In reflection about my learning goals, one important factor that will affect my learning is that I am an adult learner. Mezirow states, that transformative learning is the goal of adult education. According to Mezirow transformative learning is the process of critical reflection, which is caused by experiences which can cause individuals to question their beliefs, views, and perspectives. Adults learn by questioning, and validating their beliefs and perspectives. Mezirows theory is based on Habemas' theory of the three basic human interests which are the individual's interest in controlling their environment, understanding each other, and acquiring self- awareness. Lange (2004) states, that there is a distinctive learning process that involves the restoration and transformation of the people's attitudes towards their lives and workplace. Her article discusses the importance of transformative learning, in adult education and finds that transformative learning is very important, because it allows individuals to learn in various ways.
