The theory of evolution that was popularized by Charles Darwin is one of the most fundamental discoveries in the study of biology. Darwin's breakthrough helped to explain why certain species thrive in their environment, while others struggle to survive and eventually become less prevalent in the environment. Evolution also introduced the concept of natural selection, which could explain how new species could evolve over long periods of time by accumulating slight changes over extremely long periods of time.

The complex and diverse nature of life on Earth can be explained by the theory of evolution because organisms adapt to the environment in which they live. This means that an organism

that lives in a rainforest environment and an organism that lives in a desert environment will undergo different adaptations as a result of their environments. These adaptations explain why life is so diverse on Earth, because species accumulate adaptations based on successful reproduction in their environment. The diverse environments that are present on the Earth show why there are so many different adaptations that take place.

Natural selection is an important part of how variations within a population occur, as the individuals within a population that are the best suited to the environment will be the most likely to survive and pass on their characteristics. The process of artificial selection and natural selection vary in that people are responsible for artificial selection, while natural selection is determined only by nature. In artificial selection people choose to breed plants and animals with desirable characteristics, but in natural selection the organisms that are best suited to their environment continue to produce offspring.
