Implementing Five-Step Strategy for Critical Reading

Reading is one of the basic key skills that people use for intellectual education, for this reason it is important to understand and utilize critical reading. It is essential to use critical reading when analysis an article or book in which an author intended to persuade and/or influences others to recognize the misrepresentation. When reading articles on websites, newspapers and news stories, an individual should remain focus on the facts rather than with allegations. In the article -“Stand your ground law” survives Florida House vote- is only one of many articles that is essential for critical reading.

In this article the author uses Zimmerman case of shooting an unarmed teenager, Trayvon Martin, in self- defense. However, when he was acquitted the author used their story to establish the flaws in the law. In this case the author showed bias by selection of sources, while, the sources are relevant to the article because the law does need working on; however, inequitable to the opposing side. In addition, the chosen quotes apposite to the author argument about the law, posing against it. Without knowing the truth and facts about the story can hinder the person’s conclusion. When reading articles the words can also affect the person’s feeling, and thoughts.

Understanding the power of words can aid the critical reading process. When people are aware about how an author uses words to persuade, manipulated and influences others, they are able to see passed any misinformation, fallacies and persuasion to form a conclusion of their own about the subject. In the article the author uses the word “controlled” to make the reader feel the vote was unjust, such as “Republican –Controlled House,” and “GOP-Controlled Legislature.” In addition the writer uses quotes that exercise words to identify Zimmerman as a lunatic and delusional,...
