Focusing on improving the present and changing our future requires us as human beings to realize the stages at which we as everyday people go through such as adolescence following rebellion, parenthood, mid-life crisis, caring for aging parents and grandparents and of course death. How people deal with these issues is what calls the need for human services. The first theme we focus on is problems in our everyday living such as how we connect with family and the community around us. Second theme we focus on is the growing number of people in the modern world and how more and more people are feeling alienated from not only families but the communities as well. The third theme we focus is on self-sufficiency and how I believe this is one of the most important that we should focus on in our field. And last but not least is Social care, social control, and rehabilitation.

The disciplines that we as future human service workers need to professionally live by and understand include psychology, sociology, and anthropology. With each unique discipline combined we will have a better understanding of exactly how people need a helping hand especially with the situations they are dealt with such as family and the community or environment around them. Sociology in my opinion is the most important discipline that we should consider followed by psychology. Learning how people grew up and all the factors that play into that I believe we learn exactly how their psyche was developed.

Society’s views concerning mental health and the methods on how we as society should deal with it has greatly improved over the past few centuries, particularly the past three.
