Case 4: Eastern International Food Service Corporation

1. Communication Effectiveness

Assessing Mr. Stanley Strayhorn’s communication effectiveness on how he acted with the given situation of Eastern International Food Service Corporation (EIFSC) he did a poor job as the general manager. His leadership, which included the effectiveness of his communication, either made or broke the crucial performance of EIFSC. The group believes that Mr. Strayhorn should have dealt this situation in a steadfast manner on which he should have first gathered data and information on the current situation and should have asked for an urgent meeting with the company’s owners regarding the company’s future in order to resolve the ongoing rumors and to address the mislead employees. Although a company would usually silence the company’s future plans, this delicate situation does not give them much option but to disclose the future of their company at Ocean Point.

Mr. Strayhorn’s silence on the situation have lead to a dark working environment plagued with a declining morale resulting into poor productivity which is hurting the company’s target bottom lines.

Morale

After heavy circulation of rumors about EIFSC not getting a renewed contract at the end of two weeks time together with the opening of concession stands by Ocean Point using their own employees totally crushed the morale of Mr. Strayhorn’s employees. Mr. Strayhorn was not able to provide enough communication regarding the rumors which made their employees feel like they didn’t need to work as hard anymore because they weren’t going to be hired again anyway. That feeling of hopelessness was like a spreading disease among the employees of EIFSC. The choice of being silent about an issue like that can really destroy a person’s morale, especially towards a job that opens during the Summer season only.
