What is Body Modification

Body modification is altering the human body for religious reasons, to display group membership, to create body art, plus many more. There are many types of modification, such as, body piercings, tattooing, removal or splitting, hair cutting/removal, branding, scarification, etc.

What is a tattoo?

A tattoo is a permanent mark or design in the skin; it is done with ink and needles. The needles injects ink in the dermis, which is the second layer of the skin, the wound scabs over and after the skin heals the new layer of skin is showing a design. The word “tattoo” originates from the Samoan word tatau, which means “to mark something.” It is a very expensive modification to get and to remove.

Tattoos are done for various reasons, some due to spiritual beliefs, others to create body art, others do it on a dare because they think at the time it’s a great idea at the time.

* The Polynesian people believed their tattoos showed their spiritual power or life force.

* The Samoans used tattoos to define the ranks in the social order, among chiefs and assistants, starting from the distinguished families in the proper birth order.

* The Hawaiians tattooed for ornamentation, distinction and also to guard their spiritual health and spiritual well-being.

* In the Western Culture tattoos are display of rebellion, artistic expression and even sometimes as a coping mechanism for any kind of trauma.

Tattooing must be done in a clean sterile environment and needles. The neglect of these safety procedures can cause contraction of blood diseases, or infections such as Hepatitis B and C, HIV. .
